How the New Covenant sets us free

Share

How do we discern the difference between the new covenant we have through Christ Jesus and the old covenant established through the laws of Moses? This is a very deep question, but here’s a start to studying it.

A covenant is a binding agreement between persons, situation, or promises.

Romans 7:6 But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.

In other words, I believe God still wants us to obey.., but obey the Holy Spirit’s prompting and guidance in our lives instead of following the rules and regulations set forth before Christ died for us (just for the sake of robotic requirements).

Hebrews 7:18 Yes the old requirement about the priesthood was set aside because it was weak and useless. for the law never made anything perfect. But now we have a confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

So what then?

John 1:16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.

God’s blessing and favor in our lives are the fruit recognized for faithful obedience to God’s unique plan for us. Not that a devout Christ follower won’t endure trials of many kinds, it’s that when we find ourselves in the new covenant with God, we are simply free to be.., free to be God’s children, free from what owned us before we received the free gift of Christ, and free to be used by God for his purposes and glory.
